More Than Just a Virus: Understanding the Current Flu Through the Lens of TCM

It’s a heavy time to be out and about in Western Washington right now. If you’ve walked through a grocery store or picked your kids up from school lately, you’ve likely heard that distinctive, hollow cough echoing down the aisles. It feels like every other text message we receive is from a friend or family member bowing out of plans because they’ve "come down with that thing going around."
It’s not just in your head—this winter has been particularly unkind to our community.

What’s Really Happening in Our Neighborhoods
The headlines call it "H3N2 Subclade K," but for most of us, it just looks like a week of high fevers, bone-deep exhaustion, and the stress of trying to keep our loved ones safe.
Right now, our local ERs are feeling the strain, with visits for respiratory issues climbing above 16%—well past what doctors consider a "safe" level. Most heartbreakingly, we’ve seen the impact on our youngest neighbors, with pediatric hospitalizations hitting levels we haven't seen in over a decade. In King County, the latest stats show that over 74 people across the state have lost their lives to the flu this season.
It’s scary, and it’s okay to feel a bit overwhelmed. When the world feels "under the weather," it’s a natural instinct to want to wrap a warm blanket around those we love and find a way to make them feel better.
Finding Comfort in Ancient Wisdom
When Western medicine tells us to "just wait it out," it can feel a little helpless. That’s why so many of us in the Pacific Northwest are turning to the gentle, time-tested support of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
In TCM, we view your health like a garden. Sometimes, a harsh "wind" (what we call the virus) blows through and knocks things out of balance. We don't just wait for the storm to pass; we help the garden recover.
To help you through this, we’ve prepared two specific blends at HopeSpring Wellness to meet you wherever you are:
The Immunity Blend (For when you've already caught it): If you're currently in the thick of it—dealing with that "swallowing glass" sore throat or a lingering cough—this blend is designed to clear the heat and support your body’s natural recovery. It’s like a cooling, soothing hug for a system that’s running too hot.
The Energy Blend (Your protective shield): If you’re currently healthy and want to stay that way, this is for you. It’s designed to strengthen your "Wei Qi"—your body’s protective outer layer—kind of like putting on a sturdy, invisible raincoat before heading out into the Seattle mist.
A Gentle Reminder
Whether you’re sipping a warm cup of our tea, heading in for a flu shot, or visiting us for an acupuncture session to clear a stubborn cough, please remember to be kind to yourself. This "Super-K" strain is tough, and your body is doing a lot of work.
Take the extra nap. Drink the warm broth. Check in on your neighbors. We’ll get through this season the way we always do in Washington—by looking out for one another.
