Frost’s Descent (霜降): Caring for Your Joints as Autumn Turns Colder
October 23–November 6

The traditional Chinese calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms, each lasting about two weeks. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), these seasonal transitions offer a thoughtful way to consider how changes in our environment may influence how we feel.
At Hopespring Wellness, our seasonal series explores each solar term and a health concern we often see around that time of year.
A Season of Cooler Mornings and Stiffer Joints
Frost’s Descent, or 霜降 (Shuāng Jiàng), is the final solar term of autumn. It marks the arrival of colder mornings and the gradual transition toward winter.
In our clinic, this is often when patients begin to mention more knee discomfort and joint stiffness. Those with older injuries or osteoarthritis may notice that joints that felt comfortable through the warmer months now need more time to loosen up in the morning.
These patterns vary from person to person. Still, the change of season is a useful reminder to pay attention to comfort, mobility, and how your body feels in daily life.
An Individualized Approach to Seasonal Care
TCM looks at the whole person, considering both your symptoms and your broader health picture. For those experiencing joint discomfort, acupuncture may be considered as part of an individualized plan to help manage pain and support comfortable movement.
Warming therapies and herbal medicine may also be considered when appropriate. Because herbal recommendations depend on each person's health history and medications, we review both carefully before suggesting any formula.
Our goal is simple: to support comfort and mobility as the colder months approach.
